The Characters of Calvin & Hobbes

Here are the main characters of the Calvin & Hobbes world as well as some of the more important secondary characters

Calvin

Calvin is a normal six year old boy who lives with his parents.  The main goal of his life seems to have as much fun as possible without ever needing to grow up.  His constant companion in his adventures is Hobbes (see below).

Many people believed that Calvin was based on either a child of Bill Watterson or even Bill himself.  To this day I'm yet to read anywhere that states who Calvin is really modelled on.

Anyone who has read a decent amount of Calvin & Hobbes realises that Calvin really doesn't have any friends apart from Hobbes (and sometimes Susie).  After getting into the comics you realise that this doesn't impact at all to those alter-ego's and phenominal inventions that Calvin comes up with.

Hobbes

Hobbes is a Tiger - no, really. To Calvin, he is a world wise Tiger with an unquenchable need for Tuna Fish Sandwiches. To everyone else he is a stuffed animal that Calvin takes everywhere with him.

Although Hobbes acts like a person he never seems to get too far away from his real Tiger-like behaviour. The way that he springs onto Calvin as he arrives home from school or when he decides to stalk Calvin shows that this Tiger definately isn't too far removed from the jungle.

Yet again according to the "10th Anniversary Book", Hobbes was named after a seventeenth-century philosopher with a dim view of human nature.

Calvin's Parents

Although Calvin's parents are a very important part of in the world of Calvin & Hobbes they have never been given names. The author decided that although that Calvin's parents were a vital part of the story they wouldn't need names - after all, who has a 6 year old kid calls their parents by their first names.

Calvin's dad is a Patent attorney, patterned after Bill Watterson's father, who gets his enjoyment from the simpler aspects of life such as Camping, Cycling or just simply reading a book. He loves his son dearly but at times wishes that his wife took him up on the offer to get a dog instead of having a kid. At times Calvin's dad likes to take advantage of his parenthood and give Calvin the wiggin's by telling him little fictions about Christmas, babies or even where wind comes from.
Calvin's mum had a stressful busy job before she had Calvin but when Calvin came along they needed someone to stay home and look after Calvin. Seeing as she was used to stress she volunteered. We see the real battles between her & Calvin at the dinner table when she tries to get Calvin to sample something new or attempts to get him to give an old recipe another try.

Susie Derkins

Susie is a normal little girl who just happens to live in the same street as Calvin. I think that they both have a bit of a crush on each other but just don't know how to deal with it.

Susie is the opposite of Calvin in nearly every way. She studies hard, is good at school, does what her parents ask and is a normal six year old girl.

Miss Wormwood

Miss Wormwood is Calvin & Susie's teacher. At times I think that the way that Calvin acts in class is simply so that he can get a reaction out his teacher. Then again it could be that Calvin really does just hate school.

There are hints throughout all the strips that Miss Wormwood is ready for retirement, smokes way too much and has to take a lot of medication. It is also hinted at that Calvin is the direct reason for these three vices.

Moe

Moe is the class bully. He seems to get perverse enjoyment from seeing Calvin squirm. He reminds me of all the jerks that I had to deal with doing P.E. in High School.

Rosalyn

Rosalyn is about the only person who can inspire fear in Calvin as much as Calvin inspires fear in others. Rosalyn is the only person who is willing to baby-sit for Calvin when his parent need a well deserved night out. More often than not Calvin will try to avoid his bedtime by coming up with nefariuos schemes to distract Rosalyn long enough to stay awake longer.

Stupendous Man

Who is Stupendous Man, surely it couldn't be mild mannered Calvin??  At times Calvin's desire to avoid a situation requires just a bit more style or penache than Calvin himself is capable of - times like this require Stupendous Man
